How does a person get access to the MLS (mulitple listing service)? What does it take?

If what you want is to input data into the system,, add a listing or such, then you would need to be a real estate agent and subscribe to the MLS that you want to use.

That would extremely expensive just for a few listings. If what you want is just to search the active listings then you can go to almost any agents website and they generally have a web site that will share that with you.

For access for searching for property you can search any major broker’s website (coldwellbanker.com is pretty good). For LISTINGS you have to go through a broker- you find discount brokers that will list your house/property on MLS for a flat fee here: http://www.listbyowneronmls.com

    For what purpose?

To view listings? Go to realtor.com come or homesdatabase.com and you can view summary listings of property. However, these lack addresses, etc.

To view listings in great detail or to actually list houses, you need to spend 90 hours in class to get your license, take the test, join a brokerage and spend about 1,200 a year to have full access to the MLS.
